The Brief

As part of their latest exhibition, Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge commissioned Leach to deliver a large-format wall covering project that would help tell the story of Mai – the first Polynesian visitor to Britain.

The museum’s aim was to create an immersive and visually impactful display that celebrated Mai’s extraordinary journey while bringing Polynesian culture to life within the gallery space. Working with Tahiti-based artis Tahe Drollet, who was commissioned to create original artwork for the exhibition, the project required the highest level of print quality and installation precision to honour the story being told.

The Solution

Our team collaborated closely with the museum’s exhibition designers to reproduce Tahe Drollet’s intricated digital artworks as five large-format wall coverings. To achieve the required quality, durability and vibrancy, the designs were produced on Titan wallpaper – our premium wall covering solution designed for seamless installation and exceptional print clarity.

Given the scale of the installation and the importance of maintaining the integrity of the artwork, precise site surveys and measurements were carried out ahead of production. The wallpapers were then printed, finished, and carefully installed by our specialist team to create a visually striking gallery experience.

The Results

The result is a stunning visual environment that immerses visitors in Mai’s story from the moment they enter the exhibition space. The use of Titan Wallpaper ensured sharp, vibrant imagery and a flawless finish, providing a rich cultural backdrop that enhances the storytelling and connects visitors emotionally to the exhibition.

The project demonstrates how large format print can elevate curatorial vision, blending art, heritage and design to create unforgettable visitor experience.

Bringing the Project to Life

Reflecting on the project, our team highlighted how meaningful it was to contribute to an exhibition with such cultural and historical significance.

“This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase what large format print can achieve when it’s combined with powerful storytelling and exceptional artwork,” said Evie Fodden, Project Manager at Leach. “Using our Titan Wallpaper allowed us to deliver depth of colour, quality and finish this exhibition deserved, It’s a brilliant example of how print can help tell stories that matter.”
